As decorating the Christmas tree increasingly becomes a distant memory, our thoughts turn to what we want 2019 to look like.

It has become a tradition for many to start the new year with a resolution, which is basically a commitment to change.

We begin with enthusiasm to change an aspect of our lives and then gradually start losing interest, get bored and fall into old habits and, before we know it, we revert to our old routines and then begins the downward spiral into “same-old” territory.

Resolutions fail because they stop being fun.  We start treating them as a chore and all it takes is one bad day and our motivation deflates and we give up on our desired goal.

But, maybe, we are approaching resolutions in the wrong way?  The intention to change is sincere – it’s just maintaining it and keeping that energy going that’s the tricky part.

Here’s some simple steps that work to help you create the change you desire.

  1. Set the intention openly by saying it out loud or writing it down what you intend to do. That shows commitment.
  2. Visualize the end goal and bring in all the senses with it. What does it look like?  What does it feel like?  What clothes are you wearing?  Do they feel different?  Can you hear someone complimenting you or maybe you can hear a specific piece of music that motivates you?  What location are you in? Do you have a taste in your mouth – perhaps from consuming different food?  Can you smell your favourite scent or perhaps the ambience of a location?  What do you feel about you in that new situation?   Create as much detail as you can.
  3. See yourself in third person first, watching yourself as the “new” you or in that new location, and then do it from a first-person perspective, embracing fully the desired change.
  4. Picture this every day for at least 1 – 5 minutes.
  5. Make it fun! Enjoy it!  If you see it as a chore you will avoid it.  If you play your favourite music whilst you visualize it, you will look forward to this process.
  6. After you have done this exercise, let it go. Avoid getting attached to how it is going to manifest.  Let the creative mind and the universe do that for you so it becomes effortless and easy on your part.  All you have to do is program your mind every day to your goal and then watch yourself effortlessly making choices that will lead to the end result.  If we get attached to how it is supposed to happen, it becomes a chore.  The creative mind is incredibly powerful.  Let it create on your behalf and you will have amazing results!
